…where’s my device protection?!…
Well folks, it finally arrived! The highly anticipated Microsoft Surface Duo sleeve by Otterbox (“Ocity”) was delivered this morning. As I made my way to the front door for this extra happy mail, I realized it has been over a month of naked device usage! The horror! We all know my thoughts on the standard Microsoft bumper (Earth to Surface) and while device-agnostic pouches have been sufficient, I have to admit that I was REALLY excited for the prospect of a sleeve specifically made for this device. Well, without further ado, my two cents…
Let’s start with the aesthetics and initial impression. It is well-constructed with stiff body form and quality materials for a nice overall hand feel. It only comes in black (fine by me!), so, unfortunately, don’t expect a rainbow of options. I’m not sure if the investment in multiple colors is on the horizon for Otterbox given the limited user base for this specific phablet…I wouldn’t hold out on waiting for a larger collection to pick from. The sleeve is a bit thicker than I initially anticipated but nothing too bulky to get in the way of handbag usage (see original post for “couture chat“). The cushioning on the interior is soft but sturdy and has definite impact protection. I have no concerns over scratching or discoloration (yet), but given the device’s propensity for color transfer, I’ll wait a little longer before solidifying this comment. Side note for those wondering – yes, the device continues to discolor from normal/average use! Finally, the closure is a magnetic “snap” that takes some effort to release, so I anticipate it will keep its integrity over time.
Given the incredibly limited options specific to the Surface Duo, this sleeve seems to cover the necessities – safety, moderate curb appeal, and ease of access to the device. Remember, this is just a sleeve…whenever the device is out of its home, it’s back into the world of careful handling and “naked” beauty. I will say that this design does allow for the device to keep the standard Microsoft bumper attached while inside. I personally removed the bumper but can attest to the fact there is plenty of room in the interior to fit the extra bulk.
This sleeve currently retails for $49.95 via the Otterbox website and is eligible for discount codes, if you have them. The Microsoft Store also appears to be selling this option. No luck with Best Buy just yet; however they do have the Otterbox folio (Theorem) if that is more your style. For the price, size, and comfort of knowing you have device-specific protection, it seems to be well worth the $50 investment if you don’t mind sleeve-only functionality!
